I travelled through the Balkans, during the period from December 1st to December 15th, 2022 , ready to explore the rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes of the Balkan Peninsula countries, including Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. The Balkans have long been a crossroads of civilizations, with a complex and often tumultuous history, shaped by the various empires and nations that have dominated the region over the centuries. I decided to travel solo, which gave me the opportunity to explore at my own pace, to follow my own interests, and to make new friends along the way. I was able to connect with the local people, learn about their traditions and customs, and gain a deeper appreciation for their way of life.

So, whether you're a seasoned traveler or just starting out, I highly recommend solo travel in the Balkans. You'll be amazed at the beauty and diversity of this stunning region and the incredible memories you'll create along the way.

Croatia and Slovenia are two of the most beautiful and dynamic countries in the Balkans, offering a unique blend of stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. During my visit to both countries in December, I was struck by the stark beauty of the winter landscapes, despite the cold, there was no shortage of warmth and hospitality, especially when I stayed in cozy hostels and had the opportunity to meet locals and fellow travelers.

One of my most memorable experiences in the Balkans was watching the World Cup semi-final in a local pub (Lajbah - Craft Beer Bar in Ljubljana) surrounded by Argentine fans living in Ljubjana. The energy and excitement in the room was palpable, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the joy and camaraderie that sports can bring people from all walks of life.

Continuing my journey through the Balkans, I went to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a city steeped in history, with a rich cultural heritage that reflects its position at the crossroads of different civilizations and religions. The city has a unique and fascinating history, marked by periods of prosperity, conflict, and rebirth.

One of the defining moments in Sarajevo's history is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which sparked the First World War. The city was also the center of the Bosnian War in the 1990s, and today serves as a symbol of resilience and hope for a better future.

Despite its tumultuous past, Sarajevo is a vibrant and dynamic city, filled with bustling markets, historic landmarks, and charming cafes. Visitors to Sarajevo can explore the city's rich history, from the Ottoman-era Baščaršija market to the elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture of the city center.

One of the most distinctive features of Sarajevo is its location in a valley surrounded by mist-covered mountains, giving the city a mysterious and foggy appearance. This natural beauty combined with its rich cultural heritage makes Sarajevo a truly unique and fascinating destination. Our journey through the Balkans takes us next to the capital city of Montenegro, Podgorica. Although it is often overlooked by travelers, this city has a lot to offer, from its rich history and cultural heritage to its bustling modern atmosphere.

One of the defining features of Podgorica is its location near the Morača River, which runs through the heart of the city. Despite its picturesque setting, Podgorica is often rainy and misty, which can make for a moody and atmospheric visit. The rain, however, does little to detract from the city's beauty, and in fact, can make it even more memorable.

One of the highlights of my visit to Podgorica was the opportunity to explore the city's vibrant food scene. From traditional Montenegrin cuisine to international flavors, the city is a food lover's paradise. If you're looking for a local specialty, be sure to try the famous ćevapi, a type of grilled meat dish that is a staple of Balkan cuisine.
